William John Voelker III passed away at his home in Arvada, Colorado, surrounded by his family on June 27th, 2024. He was 81 years old.
William (Bill) was born on December 10th, 1942 in Peoria, IL to William Voelker Jr. and Marian (Barbour) Voelker, and was the oldest of 7 children. Bill graduated Peoria Central High School in 1960, playing football for the Central Lions and achieving All-State status. Bill then attended University of Illinois School of Architecture where he received his BA in Architecture in 1964, graduating with honors and was recognized with his name on the Bronze Tablet at the university. Bill attended Harvard University School of Architecture where he earned his MA in Design. Bill was honored to have won the Plym Traveling Scholarship for University of Illinois Alumni in 1972.
Bill worked in St. Louis at Helmuth Obata Kassabaum, in Honolulu, and in Peoria at Phillips Swager Associates Architects before moving into teaching at the University of Illinois where he stayed until his retirement in 2004. During his time teaching, he also earned an MBA from U of I. William is survived by wife Kathey (Hunt) Voelker, children Dan Voelker, Max Voelker, and Kim Voelker and siblings Steve Voelker, Mary (Voelker) Welle, and Bob Voelker. He was preceded in death by siblings Danny, Mark and James.
