Stephen B Batman, beloved husband and father, passed away at his Arvada, Colorado home on Sunday September 1, 2024. He was sixty-five. Born June 15, 1959 in Richmond, Virginia, he grew up in Newark, Delaware. He married his college sweetheart, Margaret, in July 1986 and later proudly welcomed his sons, Connor and Owen, into the world.
Steve was a proud father and hard-working provider for his family. An alumnus of the Colorado School of Mines, Steve graduated with a BS in Mining Engineering in 1985. In 2006 he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and a 4-year life expectancy and, as with most things in his life, Steve took this news in stride and continued working until retiring in late 2017. Over the course of his 32-year career he worked at and managed various gold mining operations and related projects in the US, Canada, Australia, Tanzania and Surinam. Steve’s everyman, down-to-earth demeanor earned him the respect of the crews that worked for him. When not on the job, Steve was never one to sit idle. He loved being outdoors, hiking, biking, skiing, doing yard work, puttering about the house, walking the neighborhood or pretty much doing anything that kept him in motion. His presence, affable manner and quick laugh will be greatly missed by family, friends and neighbors.
Steve is predeceased by his parents, Rev Richard F and Dr Louisa S Batman, and is survived by his wife of 38 years, Margaret “Kal” (Coryea), two sons Connor and Owen, brother David (Elsa) Batman, sister Anne (Kirt) Holder, two nieces, two nephews, aunts, an uncle, and many cousins.
At Steve’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. His ashes will be scattered high in the Rocky Mountains he so dearly loved. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that friends and loved ones make a donation to the US Forest Service’s Plant-A-Tree program at https://plantatree.fs.usda.gov/tree-donation or to The Sierra Club Foundation at https://www.sierraclubfoundation.org/.
