Marvin Eugene Giddings of Arvada passed away at the age of 83 on October 30, 2024 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Marv was born in Denver, September 22, 1941 to William and Ruby Giddings. He lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his community and his faith and leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, service and laughter.
A proud graduate of Wheat Ridge High School in 1959, Marv lettered in track and field, played trumpet in the award-winning band, and served as class president. After graduation, he went on to earn his BS in Mechanical Engineering and a MS in Economics at Colorado State University. He and his wife, Phyllis, then moved to Denver where Marv earned a Master of Religious Education at Conservative Baptist Theological Seminary.
Their next move took them to British Columbia where Marv impacted the lives of many students as Dean of Students and a professor for 5 ½ years at Trinity Western College. In 1974, they moved back to Arvada, CO and Marv began a successful 25-year career at Public Service (now Xcel) specializing in rates, regulations and finance. Even in retirement, Marv continued to share his knowledge and experience, teaching part-time at Colorado Christian University and also lent his talents to A&M Steel, where he provided steel estimates.
Marv's life was a testament to service. Beginning in the late 1980’s working with Phyllis, he considered it a privilege to help many Russian refugees secure jobs and housing, settle the kids in school, and drive to appointments - a reflection of his deep compassion for those in need. His love for sports and the youth in his community was evident in his 26 years as a soccer referee. Marv's commitment to Hope House demonstrated his heart for service, as he raised funds by aerating lawns, and offered his time and skills to improve the lives of the teen moms and their children who lived there. Further afield, he joined his brother Del on a number of trips to Thailand to build clean water systems for villages, helping to improve countless lives through their efforts.
Above all, he served his Lord. He was a kind and compassionate man who never hesitated to lend a hand to anyone in need. He loved his family and greatly enjoyed spending time with them, especially if it involved outdoor activities like camping, hiking, or skiing and working on house projects like painting, fence-building, or even just yard clean-up.
Within the church, Marv's roles were numerous and impactful. He served with joy as a deacon, music director, teacher, and lay pastor, touching many lives. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, and he lived out his beliefs through his actions and the love he showed to others.
Marv’s unwavering love for his family was the foundation upon which he built his life. Each family member carries forward his spirit of generosity, his commitment to community, and his unshakeable faith. He is survived by his wife Phyllis, their children Kimberley (Carl) Malone, Whitney (Steve) Wantuck, Nicole (Matt) Spahn and Andrew (Carrie), grandsons Sawyer and Caelum Spahn, Ben and Henry Giddings, Reid Wantuck and granddaughters Rylan Spahn and Reese Wantuck; his brother, Del, sister June Losier, 3 nieces and 1 nephew. He instilled in them the values of faith, humor, and generosity, and they will carry his legacy forward finding joy in service and purpose in faith.
Friends and family will remember Marv as a funny, faith-filled, and generous man. The twinkle in his eye will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In life, he was a man who filled every role he played with joy and a commitment to making the world a better place. Though Alzheimer's Disease may have been the final chapter in his earthly story, the tales of his kindness, his service, and his laughter will be cherished and remembered until we see him again.
