Lewis S. Lazaroff Jr., age 88, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, and went home to be reunited with his beloved wife and soulmate, Winona Marie Lazaroff. Lewis and Winona shared 67 wonderful years of marriage before her passing on June 11, 2024. Their love story was one of unwavering devotion, partnership, and family.
Together, Lewis and Winona raised two sons, Mark and Shane, and were proud grandparents to Justin, Amanda, Haily, Cameron, and Marissa. Nothing brought Lewis more joy than spending time with his family and watching future generations grow.
Lewis was preceded in death by his wife, Winona; his parents, Lewis Sr. and Victoria; his brother, John J.; his sister, Mary Ann; his brother-in-law, Michael Stangle; his sister-in-law, Sandy Lazaroff; his niece, Diana Kay; Paul and Nora Crabill; his brother-in-law, Alan Crabill; and several cousins.
In 1962, Lewis and Winona moved from Arvada, Colorado, to Orange County, California. There, Lewis worked at a Union 76 service station owned by Winona’s uncle, Seward Watt. Always eager to learn and create, he attended night school for commercial art and painted signs for local businesses from his home garage. He also spent weekends working at Orange County Raceway before transitioning into the machinist trade, helping build computer cabinets used for the Navy.
Lewis returned to Colorado in 1971 during a difficult economic period. Never one to back down from a challenge, he purchased a Phillips 66 full-service station located at 14th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood and became a successful entrepreneur. After seven years, he sold the business and embarked on what would become the greatest venture of his career.
Lewis founded Freewheel Vans, Inc. in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, where he designed and built transportation solutions for people with physical disabilities. Through his innovation, hard work, and compassion, he helped countless individuals gain greater independence and mobility. He remained dedicated to the business until his retirement in 2003.
In retirement, Lewis enjoyed traveling, tinkering with his beloved classic cars, attending car club events, reconnecting with lifelong friends, and, most importantly, spending time with his grandchildren and family. He was known for his sense of humor, strong work ethic, creativity, determination, and the many stories that brought laughter, wisdom, and cherished memories to those around him. Those who knew him will remember a man who worked hard, loved deeply, and embraced life with enthusiasm.
Lewis will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
While our hearts are heavy with his loss, we find comfort in knowing he is once again by the side of the love of his life.
