Jerome Simmons, a cherished husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2023, in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. He was born on May 20, 1931, in Oak Park, Illinois and was one of eight children. Jerome’s journey through life was marked by dedication, kindness, and a quiet strength that left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him.
Jerome, affectionately known as Jerry to his close friends and family, was a proud graduate of Downers Grove North High School. After completing his education, he trained as an engraver. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army, a period of his life that shaped his values and work ethic. Following his military service, Jerome continued his career as an engraver and also worked as a skilled machinist at Nalbach Engineering until his retirement. His precise work as an engraver was not just a job, but a craft he perfected with passion and patience.
In his personal life, Jerome was a beacon of love and stability. He was married to Shirlee Simmons for 66 years. He was a devoted father to Scott Simmons, Linda Simmons, and Lisa Kellogg, and cherished the addition of his daughter-in-law, Katy Moore, and son-in-law, Phil Kellogg, into the family. Jerome was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Linda, whose memory remained a source of strength and inspiration for him. Jerome was blessed with eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Jerome’s interests were a reflection of his personality: thoughtful and engaging. His love for golf was well-known, as he spent many a serene morning on the greens, perfecting his swing and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow golf enthusiasts. He enjoyed reading newspapers, keeping up on current events, and having coffee with friends.
Those who knew Jerome will remember him for his gentle demeanor, his sense of humor, and his uncanny ability to listen deeply, offering words of wisdom when they were needed most. He was a man who believed in the power of hard work, the importance of integrity, and the value of a life well-lived.
As we bid farewell to Jerome Simmons, we celebrate a life that was full and well-lived, a narrative woven with love, perseverance, and grace. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth and generosity that will continue to light the way for his family and friends. Jerome’s memory will be cherished and kept alive in the stories that will be told and retold by those who loved him.
In accordance with his wishes, Jerome’s life will be commemorated in a ceremony, 10:30 AM, Friday, June 21, 2024 at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado (staging area "C"). He will be laid to rest with the dignity and respect that he so richly deserves, leaving behind a trail of memories that will be treasured forever.
