Jay Alan O'Toole passed away surrounded by loved ones on New Year's Day, January 1, 2026, at the age of 68. Born on August 17, 1957, in Warren, Michigan, to Patricia Bondi and Richard O’Toole, Jay’s life was a testament to hard work, integrity, and a generous spirit that left a memorable mark on all who knew him. He was a beloved son, brother, father, devoted husband, and cherished friend.
Jay spent his formative years growing up in Royal Oak, Michigan. He attended Mott High School, where his natural athleticism shone through as he excelled in a variety of sports. Following high school, Jay chose to serve his country, volunteering for the U.S. Army from 1974 to 1977. His service included a significant period stationed in Germany.
Following his military service, he worked as a concrete finisher for many years. He then transitioned to the Denver Mint, where he worked from 1994 to 2005, and concluded his career at Buckley Air Force Base from 2005 until his retirement in 2017.
Professionally, Jay built a distinguished career marked by exceptional leadership and a genuine dedication to mentoring others. His colleagues will remember him not only for his expertise but also for the invaluable guidance and support he offered throughout their careers and his leadership in the civil engineering Union.
Jay's personal life was centered on the love and laughter he shared with his wife, Debra O’Toole, whom he married in 1999. Together, they built a beautiful family and a warm home. He was a proud and supportive father to his children, Sean (Larisa) O’Toole and Meghan (Matthew) Tanis. The greatest joy later in his life came from his four cherished grandchildren: Carter and Juliette Cressman and Riley and Jackson Tanis. Jay’s greatest role was being a father and grandfather. As Papa, he approached everything with enthusiasm, always ready for a new adventure, golf lesson or a quiet moment with them leaving with everlasting life lessons.
Beyond his professional life, Jay found genuine happiness in several pursuits. He spent countless hours coaching hockey in his earlier years, sharing his competitive spirit. The golf course was his place; the place where he found love, laughter, freedom, fun, and friendship, working on his near perfect swing. In the warmer months, he could often be found diving into his pool, enjoying a simple pleasure or a playful moment with his family. Jay's infectious enthusiasm, combined with his witty humor, and unforgettable stories made him the heart of every gathering.
Jay is survived by his devoted spouse, Debra O’Toole, his children, Sean (Larisa) O’Toole and Meghan (Matthew) Tanis, his grandchildren, Carter and Juliette Cressman and Riley and Jackson Tanis. and his sisters, Patti (Peter) Gruzin and Lorri (Dale) Franz, and his nieces and nephews Amanda (Frank) Ioco, Emily (John) Pond, Joe (Jessie) Colegrove and Dan (Kathy) Colegrove.
