Eligio Jose Velasquez

Eligio Jose Velasquez, lovingly known as “Big Lee,” passed away on July 20, 2026, in Denver, Colorado, the same city where he was born on February 24, 1962, and where his story began and ended with strength, heart, and purpose.

Big Lee lived a life that reflected courage, loyalty, and resilience. He was a loving, friendly, and optimistic man whose presence could lift a room and whose spirit could encourage anyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He carried himself with the confidence of someone who understood the value of hard work, faith, and perseverance. He was the kind of man who met life head-on, and he did so with a steady spirit and a generous heart.

He was a very proud Marine who served his country for over eight years as a young teenager, and that chapter of his life remained a powerful part of who he was. His service spoke to his discipline, his commitment, and his willingness to stand for something greater than himself. That same sense of duty followed him throughout his life, shaping the way he treated others and the way he faced every challenge. He was a man who believed in showing up, doing his best, and never backing down from responsibility.

Big Lee was also known as a jack of all trades and a true ace in character. He had the kind of practical wisdom that cannot be taught in a classroom, because it is earned through experience, determination, and a willingness to learn. He understood how to adapt, how to solve problems, and how to keep moving forward no matter what life placed in his path. His life was a reminder that greatness is not always loud, but it is always felt. It is found in consistency, in kindness, and in the ability to inspire others simply by being yourself.

His faith as a Christian was an important part of his life, and it helped guide his steps through both joy and hardship. He believed in grace, in hope, and in the power of a life lived with purpose. He understood that every day is a gift and that every person has the ability to leave behind something meaningful. Big Lee did exactly that. He left behind memories, lessons, laughter, and a legacy of love that will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rose Marie Gasca and Eligio Jose Velasquez, as well as his brother, Eligio Jose Velasquez Jr. Their memory remained a part of his life, and now they are reunited in eternal peace. He is survived by his older brother, Raynaldo David Velasquez, his only sister, Rena Chavez, his nieces Balinda Martinez and Rose Chavez, and many more family members and friends who will miss him deeply. The bond he shared with his loved ones was real, lasting, and filled with the kind of love that time cannot erase.

Those who knew Big Lee will remember his warmth, his optimism, and the way he made people feel seen and valued. He had a way of reminding others that life is not only about surviving, but about rising, growing, and continuing to move forward with faith and courage. His life stands as a testimony that strength and kindness can live in the same heart, and that a person can be both tough and tender, both grounded and inspiring.

As the great Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Eligio Jose Velasquez made people feel respected, encouraged, and loved. That is a legacy worth celebrating. That is a life worth honoring. And that is the kind of impact that continues long after a person has gone home.

Big Lee’s journey on this earth has come to a close, but the example he set remains. His life was a message of endurance, faith, and pride.
