David McElroy Obituary

A. David McElroy, known affectionately as Dave to his friends and family, and "Doc" to his students, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2024, at Saint Anthony's Central in Lakewood, Colorado. Born on February 19, 1940, in Torrington, Wyoming, David's vibrant spirit and boundless curiosity would shape a life rich in love, learning, and legacy. He was 84 years old.

David was a man of many talents and accomplishments. He was a cherished husband to his loving wife of 61 years, Jane McElroy, and a father whose wisdom and guidance shone brightly in the lives of his daughters. Though his daughter Mary Rae predeceased him, her memory remained a cherished part of his life. His daughters, Ruth "Robbin" Ellen McElroy Card, Stephanie Jane Thayer, Kristen Elizabeth Flowers, and Margaret "Megan" Dawn McElroy, will carry forward the torch of his love and values. His role as a grandfather to Drake Thayer, Joshua Thayer, David Flowers, and Christopher Flowers was one of his most treasured. David lived long enough to hear the news that he was a great-grandfather to Cohen Dean Ray Flowers.

David's academic journey was marked by a passion for languages and philosophy. He earned his BA in English and French with Honors, followed by a Masters in French, and ultimately a PhD in Philosophy, all from the University of Wyoming. His devotion to education was evident in his career as an English and French teacher, where he inspired and challenged his students to strive for excellence in all their endeavors. For many students, he met his objective to be a better teacher than those who taught him.

Beyond the classroom, David's life was a testament to his many interests and talents. He had an innate love for the outdoors, which was evident when he shared his enthusiasm for hunting and fishing with his daughters. His hands were as skilled with hammer and saw as they were with a pen, earning him the title of handyman par excellence.

Family cruises and trips were among David's favorite ways to spend time with his loved ones, creating memories that will last a lifetime. His family was the cornerstone of his world, and he took every opportunity to show his love and commitment to them.

Those who knew David would describe him as proper, thoughtful and wise, a man who approached life's challenges with a quiet, level head and a compassionate heart. His ability to fix and build, both literally and metaphorically, allowed him to create homes that have hosted many holiday celebrations. David's legacy is one of kindness, perseverance, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge.

David's life was an ever-expanding novel writ with words and deeds of dedication, love, and intellect. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take comfort in the knowledge that his spirit lives on through the lives he touched and the wisdom he imparted. David McElroy's memory will forever live in the hearts of those who knew him.

The world is a better place for having had David in it, and though he will be deeply missed, the lessons he taught us and the love he shared will continue to resonate. In his memory, we celebrate a life well-lived and cherish the time we were given with such an extraordinary soul. Rest in peace, David; your journeys have been a path to new adventures for us all.
