Charles E. Humphrey Jr., born on January 20, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2023, in Arvada, Colorado. He will always be remembered for his brilliant mind, his dedication to his family and his community, and his passion for law and business.
Charles was born to Charles E. Humphrey Sr. and Betty J. Humphrey. He was the older brother to John (Jack) Humphrey, and a loving father to his daughters Jordan Trigler and Jennifer Mampara. Charles was a beacon of strength, wisdom, and guidance for his family.
Charles attended the University of Michigan, where he studied business and law. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1964, followed by a Master of Business Administration and a Juris Doctorate, cum laude, in 1968. His academic achievements were a testament to his diligence and intellectual prowess.
After practicing tax law in Detroit for a year, Charles joined the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C., as a staff attorney. His career then took him to Houston, Texas, where he became a partner in a securities law firm specializing in oil and gas tax shelter financings. In the 1980s, he moved to Denver, Colorado, and joined Kirkland & Ellis as a partner. Charles continued to rise through the ranks, becoming the President of Addoms & Humphrey, a Business Development Company, and later the Chairman of a privately-held company that built and operated large video rental stores. His business acumen and leadership skills led him to co-found Advanced Cable Systems and later founded the Tournament of Champions of Poker. In 2002, he created Gambling-Law-US.com, a comprehensive website presenting all state and federal gambling laws.
Charles was not only a successful professional but also an active member of his community. He was a member of Jefferson Unitarian Church and a dedicated supporter of the American Civil Liberties Union, even serving as president of the Texas affiliate for three years in the 1970s. His love for arts and culture led him to serve on the Board of the Central City Opera House Association in the early 1980s. He was also admitted to Beta Alpha Psi, the national honorary accounting society, reflecting his commitment to his profession.
Despite his numerous professional achievements, Charles will be most remembered for his kindness, his unwavering integrity, and his commitment to making a positive impact in his community. He was a beloved father, a cherished brother, a respected colleague, and a trusted friend. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched and the institutions he helped build.
