With deep love and gratitude for her life, we announce the passing of Bernice Montague (Pennock) on September 16, 2025, in Arvada, Colorado, at the age of 94.
Born on December 31, 1930, in Fort Collins, Colorado, Bernice was the beloved daughter of Ivan and Edna Pennock (Newport). She grew up with her siblings, Joan and Verlin, in a home rooted in love, humility, and the values of the Church of Christ. Her faith remained a guiding light throughout her life.
While working at a local movie theater during high school, Bernice met the love of her life, Merle J. Montague. The two married on June 3, 1948, and built a life centered on family, faith, and adventure. Together, they raised five children: Ronald Montague, Maryette Shoop (Montague), Gary Montague, Zane Montague, and Paul Montague.
Bernice and Merle shared a spirit of curiosity and a love for experiencing new places. Over the years, they made homes in Idaho, Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, Hawaii, Lake Havasu, Arizona, and Westcliffe, Colorado, embracing each location as a new chapter in their journey. No matter where she lived, Bernice brought warmth, hospitality, and always had a hot meal on the table and made it look easy.
She was a woman of strength, deep compassion, and unwavering devotion to her family. A loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Bernice took immense pride in her ever-growing family. She leaves behind 13 grandchildren—Cheri, Jon, Tabitha, Wendy, Tracy, Karlee, Dante, Dani, Cami, Brandi, Justin, Clinton, and Melissa—18 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Bernice enjoyed football and was a passionate Denver Broncos fan, rarely missing a game and always ready to cheer her team on, win or lose.
Her faith, her kindness, and her unwavering presence in the lives of those she loved have left a lasting legacy. She was a powerful example of a life well-lived, and her absence will be deeply felt by all who had the honor of knowing her.
