Barbara Head Obituary

Barb’s innate strength carried her through a lengthy journey, in pain, treatments, and hope. On January 4, at home with those who loved her, she arrived at journey’s end. Born in Tyler, Texas, Barb’s world view was formed in childhood while traveling with her army family. After her marriage, she traveled in the U.S. and Europe with her Air Force husband, Charlie, and their two children, Rusty and Jennifer. While there, she was active in military Women’s Clubs, and a participant in NCO Wives Clubs. When she settled in Littleton, she was the president of the Homeowner’s Association for one term. Everywhere she traveled, she researched the attractions of the area to explore with her family. Germany and Scotland were among her favorite countries. She was interested in all cuisine, and once home often prepared the foods the family enjoyed, schnitzel in particular. She did, however, remain true to her love of Southern cooking, especially chicken and dumplings, collard greens, and Texas barbeque. From the markets in Europe and thrift stores, she developed a knowledge of antiques and ‘old’ furniture. Her love for the beauty and workmanship of old pieces translated into refinishing them and restoring them to their original beauty. She placed them in 2 of the concessions she managed in local shops. Her ability to recognize and assess the value of potential acquisitions was always accurate. The antiques she acquired graced the ambience of her home. She was creative and developed a style of decorating which was identifiable as having “Barb’s special touch”. Her curiosity about things and people fueled her interest in tracing her family using Ancestry. She would be absorbed for hours in her research, and learned that her family had come over on the Mayflower, and one of her descendants had signed the Declaration of Independence. Barb had a quick sense of humor and a strong moral compass. Her focus and love were directed to her family…she cherished them for who they were and was always a supporting presence. Her family was always impressed with her capacity for creating a beautiful home. She spoke with her children every day…including long late night conversations with her daughter. She was fortunate to have a son with skills she drew on to appreciate and work on her ‘finds’. She was happy that they both found their perfect life partners. She was a loyal friend. Whenever John Chandler or Walt Wilkins performed, she made sure that she would be in the audience and April in Texas was always on her calendar. John’s song “Going Home” and Walt’s song “I’ll See You on the Other Side” were meaningful, especially near the end of her life. She is survived by her high school sweetheart and loving husband of 62 years, William Charles Head, son John Russell ‘Rusty’ (Debbie) and daughter Jennifer ‘Jenny’ Erin Halverson (Nate), two grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, a sister Juanita Ann Head Tumelaire (Ted).
